Annie Hay, MA Hons, PG Diploma
Counsellor in Edinburgh.
I am a counsellor in central Edinburgh working with individuals, couples, adults and young people. My job as a counsellor and psychotherapist begins with you feeling understood and ends with you feeling liberated. In Transactional Analysis we describe this as a state of autonomy, where you are free to determine your own actions, thoughts and behaviour.
I will provide you with information, strategies, tools and support to relieve symptoms of depression, manage anxiety, heal from loss or trauma, and enrich your relationships.
My priority is to help you feel better by addressing the issues you identify as distressing, which have persisted over time or are recurring. I draw on my experience to offer effective treatment options tailored to your specific needs. My work is based on respect, confidentiality, empathy, and partnership. This is a progressive, planned approach which keeps you involved in what we do and the pace of the work. The goal is to resolve the underlying causes of symptoms and for you to feel clearer, more energetic and positive.
I have worked in mental health for over 20 years in private, statutory and voluntary sectors. I have also worked in education and business. This experience has richly illustrated to me how our inner private world relates and contributes to the external public world. For me, psychotherapy and counselling provide a rich and rewarding experience. Every day is stimulating and challenging, so keeping up to date with personal and professional development is important.
“Annie has a great understanding which makes you feel relaxed almost instantly. She helps you to see things a lot clearer in life, even when it is a roller-coaster at times. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to other people who might need some help”.
I work in a flexible way depending upon client’s requirements. My training is in Transactional Analysis (TA) counselling and psychotherapy. I use it to inform my thinking, as a diagnostic tool and as a way of working towards lasting change.

I respect and value the intricacy of real life, the choices we have and the power we have to make them. The complexity of our lives means that therapy is unique for each client. For me, good therapy is about understanding, honesty, empathy, creativity, good technique and effective, lasting results.
